Love Letters to Lafayette

On the journey to finding the place I’d eventually call home, I landed serendipitously in Lafayette. My expectations were low and I had no idea how long I would stay. In a short period of time I discovered that I was surrounded by interesting individuals whose contributions make up the heart and soul of this little-big-town. Their warmth, generosity, and inclusivity embraced me and I realized that I had been delivered, unknowingly, to my new home.

After living abroad in multiple countries, I can say with certainty that southern Louisiana is a world apart and entirely its own. There are a thousand things that make Acadiana unusual, but what moves me most is the way the community shows up for itself and people show up for one another.

Love, Letters to Lafayette is the result of a self-directed question: How do I contribute something meaningful to a community I’d like to be a part of?

LLTL is a community blog and publication dedicated to sharing the stories of local craftspeople, business owners, artists, creative visionaries, and grassroots projects. It exists to celebrate and recognize the hands and hearts of those who constitute the unique spirit of Lafayette and the surrounding region.

Once a week, I'll connect with someone from our community to learn about what they're doing, why they're doing it, and how their work shapes and seasons the melting pot of Acadiana.

More than anything, thank you to Lafayette for being the place that caught me in my trust fall. I had no idea I was landing in the place that would prove to be the answer to many heart-felt prayers.

Libby Burfoot is a writer-educator-speaker based in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Love, Letters to Lafayette is her first professional publication. Her background is in international education and bilingual learning, focusing on inquiry-based early childhood development. She’s lived in five countries and speaks Spanish. Her other writing projects include The Embodiment Experiment, a series of personal essays published on Medium, and a children’s book, Kindergarten Koup.
